Bridge – A lot of people-founded
secondary schools have been established in Hanoi recently, which promise to
provide high training quality to students. The schools compete with state owned
schools for the gifted and high-quality state owned schools to attract
excellent students.
The
difference between people-founded high-quality schools and state-owned schools
for the gifted is that the former requires high tuitions, therefore, they only
fit the students from well off families.
The
Hanoi-Amsterdam School for the Gifted has announced the enrolment of students
for high-quality secondary education. The candidates should be the primary
school graduates in Hanoi, who obtained the title of “excellent student” at the
schools and had the overall-mark of Vietnamese language and Mathematics at a
minimum of 19.
Besides,
the students, who cannot meet the above said requirements, but have special
learning records or special aptitudes, would be considered by the school to
attend the entrance exam.
The Cau
Giay Secondary School in Cau Giay district has also made public the plan on
enrolling 240 students for sixth grades. Only excellent primary school
graduates can attend the entrance exam. Meanwhile, the students, who won high
prizes at the city’s competitions for excellent students, or won the first
prizes at districts’ competitions for excellent students would be enrolled in
the school without having to attend the entrance exam.
The
Pham Van Dong private school, which follows the training model of the schools
for the gifted, is also seeking students for 240 students for sixth and 12th
grades.
Some
other well-known people-founded schools, namely Nguyen Sieu, Doan Thi Diem and
Marie Curie have also announced the plan to enroll excellent students for
English and French intensive classes.
High quality training requires high tuitions
Every
sixth grader of Pham Van Dong School has to pay the tuition of 2 million dong a
month.
Le Thi
Chinh, the Headmaster of the school, said that all the teachers at the schools
are the experienced teachers from well-known schools for the gifted in Hanoi,
while English teachers come from the associated schools in the US. Especially,
the school pays much attention to teaching foreign languages to all students.
IQ and EQ tests would be conducted by the school to seek students and conducted
during the training process.
Meanwhile,
a student of the Nguyen Sieu Secondary School, said the official tuition is 3.7
million dong a month for sixth graders. Besides, every student would have to
pay the admission fee of 2 million dong, 1.5 million dong for the school
investment and development, and some other kinds of fees for other services.
More
schools, more teaching models and more choices for parents
As for
the majority of Hanoian parents, state owned schools for the gifted are always
the top choice, because the schools provide high quality training at low costs.
However, as the number of seats at the schools is limited, a lot of excellent
students would fail to enroll in the schools. As for them, high quality
people-founded school would be a good choice.
Thang,
who lives in Hoan Kiem district, said that if his daughter fails the exam to
the Hanoi-Amsterdam School for the Gifted, she would apply to a people founded
school, possibly the Doan Thi Diem School.
Pham
Huu Hoan, Head of the Secondary Education Division of the Hanoi Education and
Training Department, said there are good state owned and people-founded schools
in every district in Hanoi which fit different capabilities of parents and
students. The existence of people-founded schools would help ease the
overloading of state owned schools, while students can still receive high
quality education.
