ASEAN - Asean, China urged to advance code of conduct for S. China Sea

The United States and the European Union have encouraged Asean and China to keep working on the development of a code of conduct in the South China Sea, a US statement said.

The statement followed US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's meeting Thursday with Catherine Ashton, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy.

"On the South China Sea, both sides continue to encourage Asean and China to advance a code of conduct and to resolve territorial and maritime disputes through peaceful, diplomatic and cooperative solutions," the statement said.

China and Asean members Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea, a strategic waterway with oil and gas reserves.

At a news conference yesterday, Clinton said slow progress with the code of conduct was a "sign of Asean’s maturity" as members were "wrestling with some very hard issues here.

"They’re not ducking them. They are walking right into them," she said. "So I think we’ll wait.  And it’s not up the United States.  It’s up to Asean.  It’s not up to China, it’s up to Asean.  It’s not up to any outside nation or organization.  It’s up to the Asean members themselves."
