BRUNEI Darussalam and Malaysian state Sabah, yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pave the way for greater ICT collaboration in the BIMP-EAGA region.

A press statement from the ministry said the main objective of the MoU was to promote governance, cooperation and development in ICT and multimedia initiatives which will benefit both Brunei and Sabah.

This will enable the private sectors in both parties to capitalise on each other's strengths and capabilities so that resources can be optimally utilised.

Signing on behalf of the government was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Dato Paduka Hj Alaihuddin POKDG Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Hj Mohamad Taha, while Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Resource Development and IT Bruno Vun signed on behalf of Sabah's State government.

The signing ceremony, held in Kota Kinabalu, was witnessed by the Deputy Chief Minister-cum- Minister of Resource Development and IT Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai and the State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman.

Also present at the ceremony were the Chairman of Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) Datuk Hj Arifin Hj Arif, Vice Chairman of the BIMP-EAGA Business Council Hj Roselan Johar Mohamed, heads of telcos and ICT players in Sabah.

At the same function, Brunei International Gateway (BIG) Sdn Bhd also inked another MoU with SEDCO Communications (S.Comm) Sdn Berhad to collaborate and provide hybrids of communication infrastructure to enable high-speed international capacity access and service roll-out between Brunei and Sabah.

Signing on behalf of BIG was General Manager Pg Hj Mohd Salleh Pg Hj Aji, and CEO Jasmi Adnan Thien on behalf of S.Comm.

Permanent Secretary Dato Hj Alaihuddin, in his capacity as Chairman of BIG witnessed the signing.

The MoU was part of initiatives to improve the telecommunication facilities in Sabah by tapping into BIG international capacities, namely the Asia America Gateway (AAG) and Southeast Asia Japan Cable systems (SJC). It also provides an alternative to existing service providers, hence bringing about competition and better price-quality match.

This initiative will increasingly make Brunei as a communication gateway and a transit hub for the BIMP-EAGA region, the statement said. "The bigger picture to this initiative is the implementation of the BIMP-EAGA Rink - a project to link up the BIMP-EAGA region either through fibre optics, satellite or microwave," the statement read.
