BUSINESS communities yesterday lauded the wise and just leadership of
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, who through
the government, introduced business policies that are designed towards giving
equal business opportunities to local entrepreneurs.
Speaking to The Brunei Times on
the sidelines of His Majesty's 66th birthday celebrations at the capital's
Taman Hj Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien (SOAS), members of the Chinese Chamber
of Commerce (CCC) and the "Pakistan Muslim Chamber of Commerce"
expressed their satisfaction with the existing business policies in Brunei.
Vice President of the CCC, Lee
Eng Chieng, said the current policies implemented by the government is
"good" and that "there's no preference because there is equal
opportunity to local businesses."
Lee, owner of Hock Huat Trading,
added that businesses in Brunei had prospered under the leadership of His
Majesty, who had always stressed on the growth of local SMEs.
"It's equal for everybody,
we don't have any difficulties in (business) applications," he said,
before wishing His Majesty' a blissful birthday celebrations.
Khoo Eng Cheong, a member of the
CCC who runs a communications company in Tutong said that "the people are
very appreciative of what His Majesty has done", referring to the business
policies that have been implemented by the Brunei government over the years.
"I believe businesses will
grow and continue to flourish under his rule," Khoo said.
"We would like to wish His
Majesty a very happy birthday and good health."
Another member of the CCC also
expressed his happiness for the various assistance and opportunities His
Majesty's government had given to local SMEs.
"We are proud to be a part
of the business community in Brunei and under the leadership of His Majesty,
the people have benefited," said Dr Lau Sie Chuong, owner of AIFA Sdn Bhd.
"Despite the small number of
population, local businesses had managed to survive in the country, so there's
no problem really, everybody has equal opportunities."
Owner of Phongmun Restaurant and
Harini Catering (also known as Stadium Restaurant), Lim Chai Huat said the
monarch's good leadership and efforts to diversify its economy through his
government, had resulted in a "stable economy".
"I just want to wish His
Majesty a good birthday, good health and longevity," he said.
Noor Alam Khan Hj Muqaddar Khan,
owner of Jawad Trading and Company, a member of the Pakistan Muslim Chamber of
Commerce, said that businesses in Brunei had flourished under the wise
leadership of the benevolent ruler.
However, Noor Alam called for
more local SMEs to be "more hardworking" in order to survive the
increasingly-competitive business world.
"The government of His
Majesty has been providing many possible opportunities and the local SMEs
should utilise it properly, nowadays it's getting more competitive," he
said, adding that local businesses should be promoting more local products,
instead of imported ones.
Owner of Firoz Jaya Silkhouse,
Firoz Khan, another member of the BPFA echoed the same sentiment and said that
local SMEs should capitalise on these business opportunities.
"There are a lot of business
opportunities in Brunei for the local companies to have a market share in, so
they should take these chances," he said.
He also wished His Majesty a
joyous birthday and prayed his for longevity.
