BRUNEI and Thailand are seeking more "proactive progress" in
economic ties, as the respective governments would set up working committees to
drive the expansion of cooperation in agriculture, alternative energy, halal
industry and education.
In an email interview with The
Brunei Times, Suranand Vejjajiva, the Secretary-General to the Thai Prime
Minister said the recent visit of His Majesty, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan
of Brunei Darussalam to the country had paved the way for continuing
cooperation between the ASEAN partners, with Thailand pledging its
"strongest support" for Brunei's chairmanship of ASEAN next year.
"His Majesty and Prime
Minister Yingluck wish to see the proactive progress of the areas of
cooperation as discussed. Hence, they have assigned both side agencies involved
to work closely and set up working committees to follow up and drive the
cooperation," said Suranand Vejjajiva.
The monarch met Prime Minister
Yingluck Shinawatra during the four-day visit, which ended last week and discussed
potential collaborations on renewable energy, cooperation in halal
manufacturing and the upcoming memorandum of understanding in agriculture,
slated to be signed later this year. "The meeting between His Majesty and
Prime Minister Yingluck focused on strengthening relations and enhancing
cooperation in all aspects both (at the) bilateral and multilateral
level," said Suranand.
"Thailand and Brunei agreed
to further strengthen cooperation in areas where both sides can complement each
other such as agriculture, alternative energy, education, and halal
industry."
The secretary-general, who acts
as a close aide and spokesman to the prime minister, added that although the
private meeting was only between the two leaders, "we can conclude that it
was a success and that cooperation in all the areas mentioned would
continue".
Suranand also avowed Thailand's
strong support when the Sultanate takes the helm of the ASEAN chair in 2013,
hosting the two ASEAN summits and East Asia Summit. Thailand wishes to extend its
strongest support to Brunei's chairmanship," he said, pegging the
bilateral ties as "one of the closest relationships in ASEAN".
"His Majesty's visit to Thailand has brought a great success to the
relations between the two countries, especially the existing close and cordial
ties between the Royal Families. The closer cooperation between the two
governments and peoples is one of the most important successes of this
visit."
