The member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
including Cambodia, which chaired the 45th Asean Foreign Ministerial Meeting in
Pnomh Penh two weeks ago, have approved the six-point principle on the South
China (West Philippine Sea) issue, which Manila and Jakarta initially discussed
on Wednesday, the Foreign Affairs Department said Friday night.
In a text message, Foreign
Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said it was the Philippines that first
approved the statement during the visit of Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa
on Wednesday.
“We were the first ones to
approve that statement, and we are pleased that the other member-states
including the Asean chairman approved the statement as well,” Hernandez said.
After his visit to Manila,
Natalegawa flew to Cambodia to meet with his Cambodian counterpart, Foreign
Minister Hur Namhong, also the ASEAN chairman.
The six-point principle is a call
to the Asean to:
(1) agree to fully implement the
Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea or DOC,
(2) support the guidelines of the
DOC,
(3) conclude early a regional
code of conduct on the South China Sea,
(4) fully respect the
universally-recognized principle of international law including the 1982 United
Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,
(5) continue exercising self-restraint
and non-use of force, and (
6) the peaceful resolution of
conflicts in accordance with the universally-recognized principles of
international law and including the 1982 UNCLOS.
