MANILA: The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and six Thai organisers have joined Philippine exhibitors to promote bilateral exhibitions.

The Thai Exhibition Association plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers Inc (Paceos).

TCEB will also cooperate with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Islands.

The meeting, a first for the exhibition segment in both countries, has yielded positive results, said Supawan Teerarat, the TCEB's exhibitions director.

The Asean Economic Community (AEC) is expected to drive people in the Mice (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) industry to explore regional opportunities including in the Philippines.

"The AEC will also lead to governmental cooperation on tourism promotion," said Mrs Supawan.

The Philippines ranked fifth in Asia in visitors to Thai exhibitions last year. Filipinos accounted for 7.5% of a total of 720,000 international visitors to Thailand's exhibitions last year.

The TCEB said Thailand's exhibitions reported the highest growth in Asean, at 70% in 2010, as measured by exhibition space sold. The top 10 visitors of the exhibitions were also from Asean.

The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry said the exhibitions in Thailand continue to lead rivals in Asean with total value of US$132 million from 75 events.

"We would like to offer the Filipinos exhibitions related to food, agriculture, and packaging," she said.

She expects the agreement will increase visitors from the Philippines by 10-20% next year.

TCEB has provided a special incentive programme named 100 A-Head for Filipinos trade promoters. The programme gives a group promoter (travel agents, international associations or chambers of commerce) US$100 for every delegate visiting Thailand when they bring at least 15 qualified people for a minimum stay of three days and two nights.

Another promotion _ Be My Guest Buyers _ offers complimentary accommodation to key buyers from around the world, said Mrs Supawan.

Paceos chairwoman Marisa Nallana said the Filipino government has emphasised tourism and Mice more recently, realising their revenue potential.

Most trade exhibitions in the Philippines are related to four industries _ automobiles, food and agriculture, tourism and medical care.
