More than 660,000 candidates across the country finished the first
phase of the 2012 university entrance exams for Groups A, A1 and V, which took
place July 4-5.
The exams began on July 4 with
a three hour written mathematics test in the morning and a 90 minute
multiple-choice physics test in the afternoon. The second day included 90
minute tests in chemistry for Group A and English for Group A1. The students
taking the Group V exams will do the drawing test until July 11.
According to the Ministry of
Education and Training (MoET), the July 4-5 exams were for places at 125
universities across the country. They were given in 29,916 exam rooms set up at
1,023 locations.
A total of 76,230 educational
officers were mobilised during the exams, and nearly 76% of the year’s total
registered candidates sat the exams during the first phase. For some
universities in Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City it was more than 80% of the
candidates.
The test questions were
scientifically assessed as appropriate, corresponding to the high school
curriculum and carefully graded.
According to MSc Truong Vinh
An from Ho Chi Minh City’s University of Technical Education, the mathematics
questions were not complicated but highly graded. About 70% of the exam
questions required only basic knowledge and 30% were more difficult. An average
student should be able to answer 50% of the questions correctly.
Le Ngoc Tien, a candidate from
Hoa Lu district in Ninh Binh province, said he was satisfied with his answers
on the physics paper, adding that the questions closely followed what they had
learned in high school and well-prepared students will obtain good results.
The weather in the major
cities was generally cool during the exams, and the heavy rains in Hanoi and Ho
Chi Minh City did not seriously affect the organisation of the exams. There
were also no major traffic jams reported.
University examination
councils nationwide made great efforts to create favourable conditions for the
students and provide them with suitable facilities for taking the exams. Many
young people actively volunteered to assist the candidates and their relatives
by guiding them to the exam venues, in addition to helping ease the flow of
traffic and prevent traffic jams.
The MoET sent inspection teams
to supervise the exams and detect any violations of the regulations.
After the exams finished this
morning, it was revealed that 129 candidates had violated the rules and two
examiners had been withdrawn.
