Brunei - Brunei celebrates Hari Raya Aidil Fitri tomorrow

BRUNEI Darussalam will celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Fitri on Monday (August 20, 2012) as the Syawal moon was not sighted yesterday.

Chief Judge of Syariah High Court Dato Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Muhammad Zaimi Hj Talip last night made the announcement on Radio Televisyen Brunei, by the command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.Earlier, the annual sighting for the new moon took place yesterday nationwide.

The sightings were made at numerous observatory points throughout the Sultanate, including Bukit Shahbandar in Jerudong, Bukit Ambok and Bukit Agok in the Tutong District and Bukit Lumut in the Belait District where officials from the State Judiciary Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs, State Mufti Department and the Ministry of Development's Survey Department attended the various perspective sightings.

Present during the sighting at Bukit Shahbandar was Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman accompanied by deputy permanent secretary Eddie Dato Paduka Hj Sunny along with other officials from the ministries and departments.

Prior to the sightings, the congregation was briefed on the sighting procedures by Head of the Astronomy Unit Hj Julaihi Hj Lamat who also spoke of the peak periods to sight the moon.

Yesterday's sighting period was from 6.36pm to 6.56pm where officials manned the telescopes to view the moon.

The moon was, however, not sighted yesterday at the Bukit Shahbandar observation point.
