Malaysia - More speculation over Malaysia's general election date

PETALING JAYA - A routine notice issued by Parliament to MPs confirming that the next Dewan Rakyat meeting will take place from Sept 24 has once again set tongues wagging on the polls date.

The notice, sent by courier to the offices of the 222 MPs yesterday, stated that the Prime Minister would table Budget 2013 on Sept 28 as scheduled.

It also said that the meeting, the last before the Government's term ends in April, would take place as scheduled from Sept 24 to Nov 27.

"Just got notice from Parliament-meeting starts from 24th Sept. Thus elections will be delayed and BN will go through full term?" wrote DAP's Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran under his Twitter handle @mklula.

When contacted, Kulasegaran said it was possible for the Prime Minister to only seek to dissolve Parliament next year.

However, he said Najib could also table the Budget on Sept 28 and then dissolve Parliament shortly after.

"It could also be that Najib wants to take everyone by surprise by dissolving Parliament right after tabling the Budget, like what happened in 1999," said Kulasegaran.

That year, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the dissolution of Parliament on Nov 11 while it was still debating the Budget, which he had tabled on Oct 15.
