VietNamNet Bridge – Dozens of angry people pitched tents to
besiege a molipden ore processing factory in the northern port city of Hai
Phong. This factory cannot run because of the siege.
The factory has been surrounded
for many days by tens of local residents, who got upset over this factory’s
polluting activities. They put up tents at the gate of the factory in order to
prevent the factory’s normal operations.
According to locals, the factory,
owned by the Da Nang Export Goods Processing JS Company, began operating in An
Dung ward, Duong Kinh district of Hai Phong city in 2007. Since then the
factory, which uses outdated technology, coal and other chemicals, has caused
serious pollution to water resources and air in An Dung.
Being so angry, local people
surrounded the factory. The local government inspected the factory and
suspended its operation.
“This factory has resumed
operation for a year, on a larger scale. People who live around the factory
were wretched, especially in hot days, when tens of ore containers are
transported to the factory. The old and kids could not sustain the stuffy air
caused by this factory, particularly on the afternoon and at night,” said local
man Nguyen Duc Huy.
Mr. Vu Bac Hai, a local official,
said this factory discharged pitch black and smelly smoke and toxic waste water
to the Hoa Binh river, which is the source of water supply to local people.
Local people worried of disease threats
caused by the pollution.
Hai Phong authorities set up a
group of experts to inspect the factory and other factories in the reason to
seek the source of pollution.
The inspection result will be
made public very soon.
