JAKARTA (Sept 10, 2012): Ambassador of Cyprus to Asean, Nicos Panayi
has expressed his country's readiness to work closely with Asean in enhancing
the grouping's relations with Cyprus and the European Union.
He said his accreditation as
ambassador to Asean reflected his country's keen interest to cooperate closely
with the region.
Panayi who presented his Letter
of Credence to Asean Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan at the Asean
Secretariat, here, Monday, also expressed his gratitude to Asean and its member
states for accepting him as the first ambassador of Cyprus to Asean.
In his conversation with Dr
Surin, Panayi gave a briefing on Cyprus' priority as the president of the Council
of the European Union, with the theme "Towards a Better Europe", the
Asean Secretariat said in a statement today.
Surin in congratulating Cyprus
for assuming the presidency of the EU Council, noted EU as the major trading
partner of Asean and encouraged Europe to reintegrate itself into the region.
The two also discussed political
and economic developments in the region. Panayi is concurrently the ambassador
of Cyprus to Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei.
