FIVE Total E&P Borneo BV (TEPB) scholars left for France yesterday
for higher education in petroleum-related studies under the "Total
Education Scholarship Scheme".
The scholars were accompanied by
two Total officers and are also the very first batch of Brunei scholars under
the scholarship programme which will see them undertaking their respective
courses running from six to seven years.
In an interview with The Brunei
Times before their departure at the Brunei International Airport, the scholars
said that they are looking forward to their studies as well as experiencing a
different culture.
Mechanical Engineering student,
Md Aizat Hj Hamidun, said that he felt both excited and sad at the same time as
he will be away from his family for a while.
Although he had been to France
before, he said that the study experience will be like a "new
beginning".
"I am not sure what to expect.
It is a new adventure and it is slightly scary but once you get to know the
people and language it should be alright," Mohd Aizat told The Brunei
Times.
Chantelle Phung Yee Shan, who
will be studying Geophysics, described her feeling as "excited, scared,
sad...everything combined together".
"It is the first time for me
flying off alone and leaving my parents," Chantelle said. She added that
it will also be her first time in France.
"I hope that it will be a
totally new learning experience," she said.
The Geophysics student then
expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to further her studies and also
to her parents for their relentless support.
Meanwhile, Mohd Abd Malik
Mahyuddin, shared that he felt nervous and excited.
"It is a different
(experience) because we are dealing with the people and the language,"
said the scholar who will be studying Chemical Engineering.
According to a press release from
TEPB, the students will be undergoing an induction programme to familiarise
themselves with the French education system during their first year.
It also stated the students
previously participated in various programmes such as team building activities,
internships and two months of basic French language lessons at Alliance Francaise
de Brunei.
The five were selected out of a
group of 30 students and signed the contract for the scholarship on July
17,2012, which was witnessed by Energy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office,
Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj
Mohd Yasmin Hj Umar.
The scholarship programme is a
result of cooperation between TEPB with their Commercial Area Joint Venture
partners, the Energy Department at the Prime Minister's Office (EDPMO) and is
supported by PetroleumBRUNEI.
