MYANMAR scholar Zaw Waiyan Lwin described receiving the Asean
Scholarship 2012 as the beginning of a dream.
“I promise I’ll always be willing
to make a difference and make my country proud,” he said.
Zaw was one of three students
from Myanmar who received the inaugural scholarship.
Fellow recipient Zar Chi Nway
said: “The scholarship is not only for me but for my country.”
Hnin Zaw Thu said she would do
her best, adding that she liked the classroom environment at Sunway.
She described the atmosphere
there as “open and understanding with a focus on teamwork.”
Sunway Education Group senior
executive director Elizabeth Lee said Waiyan Lwin, Zaw Thu and Chi Nway were
selected to be the first batch of scholars to receive the Sunway University and
ECM Libra Foundation Asean Scholarship.
“The scholarship is open to
students from selected Asean countries to pursue their undergraduate studies in
Malaysia,” she said at the presentation ceremony last Tuesday.
Lee explained that the
scholarship was made possible through the collaborative efforts between the
university and foundation.
“It is through the vision of Tan
Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah whose passion for education and belief that all deserving
students, regardless of their background, should have a right to quality
education, a passion that has driven the success of many educational initiatives
by Sunway of which the Asean scholarship is an example,” she said.
The scholarship covers full
tuition fees and living expenses for students to pursue pre-university and
undergraduate studies for four years at Sunway College and Sunway University.
Shortlisted applicants were
interviewed by a panel comprising representatives from the university and the
foundation.
Waiyan Lwin, Zaw Thu and Chi Nway
began the one-year Sunway Foundation in Arts pre-university programme in July
this year. They will then continue with their chosen three-year undergraduate
degree programmes in Information Technology, Communication and Accounting, and
Finance respectively.
ECM Libra Foundation trustee Lim
Beng Choon said that the scholars were chosen because they were good students
and leaders.
Dr Cheah who is Jeffrey Cheah
Foundation founder and trustee said, “It is an honour to offer these
scholarships to such deserving students who will go on to play a role in making
a difference in their community and country.”
Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia
Tin Latt was also present at the ceremony.
