Burma’s President Thein Sein will make a three-day visit to the US
starting on Sept. 24, where he will speak to the UN General Assembly.
US President Barack Obama last
month ordered an exception to a visa ban on Burma's leaders to let Thein Sein
travel freely during the UN summit.
Thein Sein's visit to the US
follows opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is set to leave for the US on
Sunday, marking her first visit to a country that has long supported democratic
reform in Burma. Her visit will garner maximum media attention, as she is
scheduled to be honoured at seven different locations across the US, starting
with Washington, D.C., and New York City.
Suu Kyi, who was elected to
parliament this year, will travel to Washington, D.C., to receive the
Congressional Gold Medal as part of her visit, in which she will be feted at a
White House dinner with President Barrack Obama, according to reports. There is
also speculation that Obama will meet with Thein Sein, but that has not been
confirmed by US officials.
The congressional medal is the
top honour bestowed by the US Congress, which voted to award it to Suu Kyi in
May 2008 when the prospect of her leaving Burma looked remote.
Since then Burma has embarked on
a wave of democratic reform, led by Thein Sein, a former general in the
military junta, who has surprised the international community with the extent
of Burma's reform movement.
