Thailand and Germany have agreed to work closely on energy and food
safety due to global economic doldrums.
The Thai-German Joint Economic
Committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong and German
Deputy Federal Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economics and Technology
Philipp Rosler came to the agreement.
Mr Rosler urged Thailand to
complete a free trade agreement with the European Union before the advent of
the Asean Economic Community in 2015.
Mr Kittiratt said the energy
cooperation would cover the exchange of expertise and technology in both fossil
fuels like clean coal and renewable sources like photovoltaic cells.
Both countries acknowledged a
stable energy supply is crucial for sustainable economic development and that
nuclear energy may not be the best option available now.
"Thailand can learn a lot
from Germany as it is among the world's leaders in alternative energy
development and technology as well as energy efficiency," said Mr
Kittiratt.
For food safety, Thailand is
among the world's top exporters of food products, while Germany has very high
food safety standards.
Mr Kittiratt said both countries
are already planning a few activities such as a regional workshop to be
organised by the German International Cooperation Agency in Bangkok next month
as well as the visit of German food experts to help build the capacity of
Thailand's food standard certification entities, laboratories and exporters.
He added cooperation should not
be restricted to meetings among experts from the public sector on these two
topics, but should involve private entities as well for public awareness.
The two countries also signed a
memorandum of understanding on disaster management, along with a technology
dialogue on sustainable water management and flood prevention.
