NEW YORK (Sept 22, 2012): United Nations' secretary-general Ban Ki-moon Friday reaffirmed the world body's commitment to help Myanmar in its reconciliation process in which Nobel Peace laureate and that country's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi played a key role in the reconciliation efforts.

At the United Nations, Myanmar is seen as an increasingly important member country of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

"We have great expectations and hope that she (Suu Kyi) will lead the path of reconciliation and greater participatory democracy and development of her country, together with President Thein Sein of Myanmar," Ban said while jointly addressing a press conference in the company of Suu Kyi at the UN headquarters.

Ban paid his "great tribute" to Myanmar President Thein Sein, who is coming soon to New York for the General Assembly session, and Aung San Suu Kyi.

"They have been walking down the path of reconciliation and political stability and democracy and human rights ... and I really count on her continuing support," Ban said.

Ban had a meeting with Suu Kyi before addressing the media, at which they discussed a range of issues, including how the United Nations can help with further democratisation in Myanmar.

The UN secretary-general, who had visited Myanmar in May, had met the Nobel Peace Prize winner, for the first time, at her home in Yangon, Myanmar, in May.

"At that time, we discussed the possibility of her visiting the United Nations. I invited her to visit the United Nations. In fact, she was a staff of the United Nations, and I would like to welcome her home," revealed Ban, who had also described Suu Kyi as a "symbol of hope" for human rights worldwide.

Ban pointed out that Suu Kyi now serves not only as general secretary of the National League for Democracy political party, but also as a member of the Myanmar Parliament, and the chairperson of the Committee of the Rule of Law and Stability.

"This is quite important, and in that regard, she can continue to help the Myanmar people and many other people around the world who may be experiencing the same hardships and abuse of human rights like herself and the Myanmar people have been enduring," Ban said.
