A joint inspection team from Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Duc District has seized a large quantity of suckling pigs being transported from Binh Dinh to Binh Duong Province without documents.

Yesterday morning the team, including veterinary officers and traffic policemen, stopped a suspicious truck for examination and found that it was carrying 1,400 live suckling pigs and more than 800 kg of suckling pig meat.

The pigs were contained in iron cages while the meat was packed in foam cartons.

The truck’s driver failed to show any quarantine certificates or other documents to prove the origin of the goods, while saying he had been hired to transport them to Binh Duong, according to Dang Thi Tuyet, head of the Thu Duc District Animal Quarantine Station.

The team recorded their findings, seized all the goods and then handed them over to Binh Duong Province’s Veterinary Sub-department for handling, Tuyet said.

One day earlier, the station seized 960 live chickens that were being transported in a truck. The vehicle’s driver, 28-year-old Nguyen Mau Teo of Dong Nai Province, had no documents related to the animals.

A similar, more serious case occurred in early July in central Thua Thien-Hue Province when traffic police seized about 800 kg of suckling pig meat – all of which was rotten and stinking – that was being transported in a truck from Nghe An to Quang Ngai Province without documents.

Another case happened in April, when a joint inspection team in HCMC seized 215 decomposed suckling pigsand a large amount of rotten pigskin loaded onto two buses at Cam Van Co Ltd, at 49 Tan Thanh Street, Tan Phu District.
