Malaysia - Malaysia steps up monitoring, intelligence sharing to counter terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has stepped up monitoring and intelligence sharing with regional countries on terror networks and movements, says Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

The measure comes after two Malaysians were arrested over terror charges in a military court in Lebanon.

Mr Hishammuddin expressed concerns over international terror organisations such as Al-Qaeda hooking up with regional home-grown cells.

"I'm more concerned about their link-ups with cells, and I'm monitoring that very closely, with the CIA, the MI6, the Chinese intelligence, the Pakistani intelligence, the Indian intelligence, and I don't think all of us can be wrong," he said.

Razif Mohd Ariff, 30, is the son of a former army general, while Mohd Razin Sharhan, 21, works for a local farmer's authority.

Both were said to be recruited and trained by a regional terror network linked to Al-Qaeda. According to Mr Hishammuddin, the police had been monitoring their activities for over a year.

Mr Hishammuddin said: "They were moving, they were moving, and it's not just Malaysia. They were moving in the region. They've been trained in certain areas. But there's no reason for us to nab them because there is no evidence or opportunity for us to say that they are doing something that is detrimental or clearly detrimental to Malaysia."

He said it was difficult to pin down their influences.

"We don't know what drives them, but it seems to be something that we have to deal with, something that is going to affect all of us, and it goes across borders," he said.

On what measures the authorities would be taking to prevent young Malaysians from falling prey to international terror networks, Mr Hishammuddin said: "We have to educate, to find out the causes, to rehabilitate, to take firm action and share intelligence.''

Mr Hishammuddin added that Malaysia is frequently used as a transit centre for regional and international terror networks, but he denies that it's also a popular recruiting ground.
