PROPER expertise is needed to develop mineral resources as these
reserves can help add value to the socio-economic development of ASEAN
countries and havethe potential to attract investments.
Permanent Secretary
(Administration and Finance) at the Ministry of Development Hj Muhamad Lutfi
Abdullah said this yesterday at the opening of the 12th ASEAN Senior Officials
Meeting on Minerals (ASOMM) and the 5th ASOMM Plus Three (Japan, China and South
Korea) Consultations, at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.
Fifty delegates from the
10-grouping member states and its dialogue partners — Japan, China and South
Korea — as well as representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat attended the
meeting.
"The progress and
achievement of our ASEAN member states' initiatives on minerals have been
possible with the support and guidance from those who have been long in the
sector," said Hj Muhamad Lutfi.
He also said that the virtual
environment, turbulence and high unpredictability had forced the regional
grouping to be resilient, creative and innovative to face various challenges
indirectly affecting the minerals sector.
The meeting aims to seek support
from the three ASEAN dialogue partners in line with identified measures and
projects that were proposed by the regional grouping during its Working Group
Meeting held last September.
The meeting also agreed to elect
ASOMM leaders from Brunei and Indonesia to serve as Chairperson and
Vice-Chairperson respectively for the 12th ASOMM.
The outgoing chairperson from
Vietnam, Tran Dong Phuong, on behalf of the 11th ASOMM host country, expressed
his gratitude to all delegates from member countries and the ASEAN Secretariat
who have contributed to the success of the previous meetings.
The delegates also attended a
welcoming dinner at Royal Berkshire Hall, Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club,
last night.
The meetings end today.
