UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB)
have signed a new agreement with ASEAN and Japanese universities to further
cooperation in engineering education.
Representatives from the
government, UBD and ITB were in Bangkok last month to sign the Cooperative
Framework of the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education
Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net).
"The signing marked the new
page of higher education collaboration in the ASEAN region where leading
universities work together for socio-economic development with cooperation from
the industry, which would contribute to the establishment of the ASEAN
Community,' said ITB in a statement.
The new framework will be
operational from March 2013 onwards, and will include seven new institutions
from ASEAN and three new supporting universities from Japan.
The AUN/SEED-Net aims to advance
the engineering industry through collaborations with ASEAN universities. It
comprises 19 leading engineering institutions in ASEAN and 11 supporting
universities in Japan. The network also aims to address common issues through
academic research and conferences.
The AUN/SEED-Net was established
in 2001, emerging from an initiative derived at the ASEAN-Japan Summit. It was
originally intended as a framework toward sustainable development after the
economic crisis that struck Asia in the late 1990s. Quratul-Ain Bandial
