VietNamNet Bridge – The Prime Minister dismissed Vietnam
National University in Hanoi President Mai Trong Nhuan, after the Government
Inspectorate uncovered a raft of corrupt practises during his tenure.
Many of the university’s
faculties had let students graduate without completing or protecting their
theses, while other programmes lacked documents confirming the legal status of
the affiliate or were insufficiently vague about project details.
An inspection of the university’s
financial revenue and expenditure also exposed that Nhuan had skimmed money off
into another account.
Nhuan was requested to return
over VND21 billion (USD1million) which he had illegally siphoned off university
budgets.
The Government Inspectorate
suggested the university determine what responsibilities Nhuan had exercised
over the years, especially his role in the illegally issued documents,
permission granted to foreign education facilities, personnel recruitment, and
misconduct related to affiliated programmes.
A financial inspection of the
Centre for Educational Technology and Career Development (ETC), an official
member of Vietnam National University in Hanoi, revealed that ETC had not
transferred the total payment to its affiliate, with some of the money going to
an unknown bank account in Singapore, which might be related to ETC head Nguyen
Quang Hoa Binh.
Professor Mai Trong Nhuan was
born in 1952 and served as the President of Vietnam National University in
Hanoi since 2007.
