Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has stated that
after the implementation of the National Health Insurance (JKN) managed under
the Social Security Providers (BPJS) programme starting from Jan.1, 2014, no
more Indonesian people should be living without health coverage.
“Through the BPJS for the health and manpower sectors,
I hope that I will no longer hear about workers without insurance and that
there are people who cannot receive medical treatment due to financial
reasons,” said Yudhoyono in his remarks at the official launch of the JKN
programme and the BPJS for the Health sector at the Bogor Palace on Tuesday, as
quoted by Antara news agency.
The President said that from now on, the poor could
get treatment free of charge at community health centers (Puskesmas) and
hospitals by using the JKN mechanism, which was organized under the BPJS for
the health sector.
“This is the government’s response to the people’s
wishes. With such a service, there should be no more issues for people to
obtain health coverage,” said Yudhoyono.
He said that starting from Jan1, 2014, as a first
step, the JKN programme would be delivered to 121 million people or 48 per cent
of the Indonesian population.
“This is the biggest ever leap that has been taken by
Indonesia since its independence. The service’s coverage cannot be matched by
any insurance companies,” Yudhoyono said.
In the second stage, he said, it was hoped that all of
Indonesian people could participate in the BPJS for Health sector on Jan1,
2019.
President Yudhoyono said the BPJS for Health sector
could hopefully provide proper health insurance and care services for its
members.
“Meanwhile the BPJS for Manpower will take effect on
July 1, 2015. Before the date, [state-owned insurance company] PT Jamsostek
will still provide services to their premium holders except for health care
services that have been transferred to the BPJS for Health sector,” said
Yudhoyono.
