Harvard Kennedy School Vietnam Program

Vietnam's Socioeconomic Development

Established in 1988, the Vietnam Program is committed to the study of Vietnam’s socioeconomic development. Using a multifaceted approach that combines research, teaching, and policy analysis, the Vietnam Program is an influential participant in policy discussions that are shaping Vietnam’s ongoing transformation.

Avoiding the Stagnation Trap

While focused on Vietnam, our research engages with dilemmas that are central to the broader study and practice of development. Why do so many countries that succeed in escaping poverty subsequently fall into economic stagnation? Improving the governance of public and private institutions is an important part of the answer.

Multiple Lenses to the Study of Development

Development cannot be understood through the lens of a single discipline. Understanding the challenges confronting Vietnam and clarifying the policy options available to overcome them requires a sophisticated grasp of the rich fabric of contemporary Vietnamese society and the political, economic, and cultural factors that shape it. The Fulbright School, the Vietnam Program’s flagship initiative, has become Vietnam's leading center for educating the country's leaders. Our research, teaching, and executive training programs seek to enhance and expand critical knowledge for both policymakers and academics alike. More info
