Vietnam - Vietnam mulls adjustments to land laws following controversial evictions

The government will propose to the National Assembly several adjustments to the current land laws, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at a meeting with lawmakers in the northern city of Hai Phong Wednesday.

Dung said the government is still discussing the minimum number of years for which land should be leased to farmers. Generally, they will continue “assigning and leasing lands for limited time periods, but the period will be extended,” he said.

“Land laws need to clarify the rights of the government, the rights of people and the matter of ownership,” he said.

Vietnam’s current Land Law stipulates that agricultural land should be leased for a minimum of 20 years.

Since the beginning of this year several land eviction attempts have grabbed headlines, including one in Hai Phong’s Tien Lang District where farmers and local authorities were engaged in a violent encounter that injured six police officers and soldiers.

After that local experts have called for the government to adjust land laws, leasing land to farmers indefinitely or for longer periods.
