YANGON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has
pledged to continue to work actively with ASEAN member states in community
building and for the achievement of the common goals, said the editorial of the
official media New Light of Myanmar Monday.
The pledge came after Myanmar was accorded
alternate chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in
2014 at the 19th ASEAN Summit held in Bali of Indonesia from Nov. 17 to 20..
Myanmar once renounced in 2006 its turn of the
ASEAN rotating chairmanship under then domestic political situation.
Recognizing significant reform of Myanmar, the
ASEAN leaders' decision to endorse Myanmar as the rotating chair of the
regional grouping in 2014 was made after honoring the report of the ASEAN
Foreign Ministers Meeting held on Nov. 16, in which all foreign ministers
unanimously supported Myanmar's taking of the chairmanship in 2014.
A foreign ministry's statement made public on
Monday also expressed gratitude and appreciation to the ASEAN member states for
the support.
At the summit, Myanmar joined in signing three
accords -- Bali Declaration on ASEAN Community in a Global Community of
Nations, Bali Declaration on ASEAN Unity in Culture Diversity: Toward Strengthening
ASEAN Community, and Agreement on Establishment of ASEAN Coordinating Center
for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management.
At the summit, ASEAN heads of state or
government exchanged views on matters related to ASEAN Community, international
and regional issues such as global economy, Middle East and North Africa,
Korean Peninsula, natural disasters, Millennium Development Goals, protection
of migrant workers an combating human trafficking.
Myanmar joined the ASEAN on July 1997 and
attended the ASEAN summit for the first time in May and the second time now.
