USA - Business is booming for pharmaceutical company

A PHARMACEUTICAL company is set to create a crop of new jobs in Burton as trade booms.

The Clinigen Group is bucking the trend by pulling in more work, allowing it to create 30 new jobs in 18 months.

The company made news last year when it was named number one in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list of top British companies.

Chief executive Peter George said: “Eighteen months ago we had 40 people based at our offices in Burton. By the end of this year there will be more than 70.

“We have been particularly employing people with language skills because we are selling products around the world.”

The company, which produces and sells drugs for hospitals and healthcare providers, has offices in Burton’s Centrum 100 business park, Philadelphia in the USA and Tokyo in Japan.

The firm recently signed a worldwide contract, worth an undisclosed sum, with drugs manufacturer PCAS to produce Foscavir, an antiviral medication used for treating HIV, Aids, sexually transmitted diseases and also used in some bone marrow procedures in Asia.

Mr George, who has been chief executive since a merger formed the Clinigen Group 18 months ago, said the company’s secret was ‘doing what you say you’re going to do’.

He said: “A lot of companies say what they want to do by putting together lots of plans and presentations, but we actually put this into action.

“We monitor our progress month-onmonth to ask what we are doing well and where we could improve.”

This year’s business plan states Clinigen will experience 50 per cent growth this year and Mr George claims the firm is on course to meet this.

“Being named in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 definitely raised our profile as a company. It has been useful to make staff aware of what we are doing.

“It is a great validation of us as a business.”
