Vietnam - Traditional media left behind

HCMC – The Internet has surpassed radio and print media to become the most popular means in Vietnam, according to a survey jointly conducted by Yahoo! Vietnam and Kantar Media Vietnam.
The survey Net Index took place in January and February this year to study Internet use in Vietnam, and its findings were released on Wednesday. Some 1,500 people from four big cities Hanoi, Danang, HCMC and Can Tho joined the survey through direct interviews.
The result shows that daily Internet use has reached 42%, leaving radio and newspaper behind at 23% and 40% respectively. Internet access from home has risen from 75% in 2010 to 88% in 2011 while cyber-café access fallen from 42% to 36%.
Attractive packages and the presence of 3G networks have accelerated the trend of Internet access via mobile phones to 46% from 26% last year. Reading online news and visiting electronic portals are among the most popular online activities at 97% and 96% respectively.
Notably, the number of Internet users to access to social networks has surge to 55% from 41% in 2010.
Internet users aged from 15 to 24 mainly engage themselves in entertainment activities, such as online games (38%), music (57%), and sports (39%). Besides, young people also use the Internet to update information on social networks (52%), or watching interesting video clips and photos (45%).
The result significantly points out the development potential of e-commerce in Vietnam, especially the blooming group shopping service known as Groupon.
This service has become a phenomenon as 58% people surveyed expressed their interest in Groupon. However, only 13% said they had used the service.
The biggest challenge for e-commerce in Vietnam is that consumers have not trusted online payment. Online transactions are mainly dealt by cash payments (93%) or money transfer via ATM (18%), according to the survey.
In addition, consumers have not completely seen e-commerce as a shopping method, but a source to compare prices or look for information.
