Brunei - TV shows on Asean issues proposed

Brunei and Thailand's collaboration in the field of information and broadcasting should focus on producing programmes that show the interests of Asean region as the 10-member grouping are working towards the establishment of Asean Community in 2015.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Ladavan Bua-Aim, the co-chairperson of the 10th Joint Technical Committee Meeting between Brunei and Thailand, said that the meeting would be evaluating the previous programmes that both parties had done and discuss new plans to create broader contents on Asean issues.

"I think we should see the programmes with broader perspective which do not only restricted to contain Thailand or Brunei issue," said Ladavan, who is also the deputy director-general of the Public Relations Department at Thailand Prime Minister's Office.

Ladavan suggested topic that should be presented to the public in both countries are among others on energy, environment, food security and fighting against illegal drugs.

"We should decide the contents of the programmes to let the world know about us, the Asean, and also the cooperation with our dialogue partners such as China, India, South Korea, Japan and others," she said, adding that the content is the key.

Both Thai Public Relations Department and the Department of Radio Televisyen Brunei and Information Department of the Prime Minister's Office, have conducted a number of programmes in the form of documentary, news, exchange of publication, exchange of visual team and exchange visits of the officers.

She said that so far both parties have aired programmes such as on padi plantation, Brunei's halal food, drama on Kampong Kita (our village) and culinary show entitled Selera Brunei (the taste of Brunei).

She said that the programmes have received good feedbacks from the Thai viewers, as Thailand is one of the close friends to Brunei in Asean.

Thailand also comprise Malay Muslims who live in provinces in the south, she added.

Both parties have been conducting meetings after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on Cooperation in the field of Information and Broadcasting was signed on August 2001.

Signing on behalf of Brunei was His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, while Thailand was represented by Dr Suraklart Sathirathai, the then minister of Foreign Affairs.

The MoU aims to enhance cooperation between broadcasting and information agencies of countries and also focuses on human resource development through training and education, research development and communication technology and also television exchange programmes.

The two-day meeting will discuss areas of projects under the MoU such as on the exchange of television programme, exchange visits by the documentary teams, television production on variety shows.

While in the radio cooperation, both parties will talk about the programmes which broadcast same topic on special occasion, and the exchange of radio broadcasters.

Thailand hosted the first meeting which was held in May 2002 in Bangkok.
