Singapore - Independent bookstores bucking e-book trend

SINGAPORE: When America's second largest bookstore chain Borders went belly up this year, some analysts predicted that the era of bookstores may be over, replaced by the emergence of e-books.

But independent bookstores in Singapore appear to be bucking this trend, with six shops opening in the past two years.

Bookstore owners tell Channel NewsAsia that it's all about creating a niche.

Bookstore "Books Actually" doesn't offer huge discounts, and it does not have bestsellers in stock.

But the shop has been in business for the past six years.

It isn't chasing the mass market, and only sells items that its owners personally endorse.

Another bookstore "The Little Bookshop" specialises in children's books.

In keeping with its theme, its owner has created a comfortable and relaxing reading environment for its young customers.

Industry players said the popularity of independent bookstores may be due to Singaporeans travelling overseas more often and being exposed to such personal touch.
