Singapore - More help for youths at risk

SINGAPORE: The government is beefing up its Pods Youth Mentoring programme, an initiative where youths help to support their peers who're completing their rehabilitation programmes.

Minister of State for Community Development, Youth & Sports, Halimah Yacob said based on experience and feedback, some youths require more intensive support even after one year of mentoring.

So the Podz agency coordinator will now provide case management to the youth and family on a need basis. And for cases that require a longer mentoring period, the one-year programme can be extended for up to six months.

For the first time at its annual appreciation and networking event, three mentors were recognised for their contribution.

One of them was an ex-resident of the Singapore Boy's Home, who is now a scholar and is pursuing his university degree.

Pan Wei Hao was given the "Most Inspirational Award", and he said, being a mentor is his way of giving back to society.

He said: "Because personally, I've been through their phase, I understand how it feels to have a listening ear. And I'm really grateful for the people who have supported me throughout these years. And I hope I can make a difference too by stepping out as a mentor."
