Vietnam - Poor people donate land to build schools

VietNamNet Bridge – Nearly 50 poor households in a mountain commune in Quang Tri province agreed to relocate their houses to donate nearly 55 hectares of land to build schools.


The mountainous Huong Hoa district in Quang Tri province is “famous” for poor farmers who donated their land to build schools. In Thuan commune alone, a kindergarten and several public facilities have built on nearly 55 hectares of land, donated by 50 poor families.

The road to hamlet 7 in Thuan commune has become more crowded since the kindergarten was built. In a house near the kindergarten, Mr. Ho Van Hanh, 50, sat on a chair and watched kids go to school. He donated 1,500sq.m of garden to build that kindergarten.

In late 2010, hearing that the local authorities were in need of land to build a kindergarten, Mr. Hanh saw local officials to express his wish to donate his family’s garden to build the school. Previously, he refused to sell the garden for VND50 million ($2,500) for a man from Dong Ha city.

Some people said that Mr. Hanh was silly or showed off, but he explained simply: “Seeing kids that did not have a kindergarten to study, I decided to donate my land to build a kindergarten for them. My life is miserable, so I want kids to have a chance to study…”

To build a primary school, over ten families in Thuan commune donated tens of thousands of square meters of land. The school was inaugurated in early September.

Mr. Ho Van Khoa, 80, donated 1,500sq.m of land to build a kindergarten in Up Ly 2 hamlet, which is also the public space of his hamlet. “Since this school opened, seeing kids going to school makes us very happy. We feel like getting younger,” Mr. Khoa’s wife, A Mo said.

Thuan commune’s vice chair, Phan Xuan San, said that 80 percent of the commune’s population are ethnic minority people, mainly Pa Co and Van Kieu. Thuan commune makes a national record for the number of people who donate their land.

Many people have been praised by the government for their contribution to the career of education and training.
