Brunei - Brunei joins efforts to boost disease surveillance system

Brunei Darussalam is enhancing its surveillance system on infectious diseases and strengthening laboratory capacity for diagnosis and confirmation of the diseases, while maintaining high immunisation coverage, said Minister of Health at the 3rd OIC (Organisation of the Islamic Conference) Health Ministers Conference in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The conference was aimed at discussing ways to boost joint cooperation in areas of healthcare services and exchange of expertise and health professionals.

In a press statement issued by the ministry yesterday, Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Mohd Yusof said that the provision of comprehensive healthcare system is top priority in Brunei.

"The result is evident as Brunei is still free of Malaria and Polio," he said.

The minister in his remarks also expressed concerns about the implementation of the goals and targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 2015 in dealing with health, set by world leaders over the past 10 years.

"Many countries have achieved significant progress towards the goals. However, even with these progresses, there are still OIC members countries that have yet to achieve it," he said.

He insisted that on-going integrated efforts from all stakeholders and a strong commitment is essential to ensure progress and in achieving the MDG.

He shared that Brunei nevertheless has achieved most of the goals related to health by 2015 and that the Sultanate will continue and is committed to strengthen and improve the quality of healthcare for its people, the statement said.

At the working sessions, delegates discussed a number of issues, namely;

Cooperation among OIC member states towards achieving MDG No 4:

Reduce child mortality and MDG No 5: Improve maternal health;Global

Eradication of Polio;

The Fights against HIV/AIDs, Tuberculosis and Malaria;

Self Reliance on supply and production of drugs including vaccines;

Call upon OIC member countries to introduce strong laws relating to tobacco control is more robust in order to protect the present and future generation and future from health, social and economic consequences of tobacco products use and exposure to cigarette smoke.
