Brunei - Bruneians pay tribute to Steve Jobs

News of the passing of industry icon Steve Jobs has touched the hearts of many Bruneians.

They describe him as a role model, innovator, visionary and genius as they paid tribute to the Apple co-founder and shared their views on how his influence inspired them as consumer and individual.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Tweeter were abuzz with news of his passing, with many Bruneians sharing their shock, grief, condolences and thoughts.

"It was a shock felt by everyone even in Brunei. I fired up my Tweeter this morning and noticed the trending topics of his death, and majority of the tweets are coming from Bruneians," said Rano Iskandar of Ranoadidas.com.

An avid user of Apple products, Rano described Jobs as a true visionary and an innovator and an inspiration to many individuals and companies globally as well as locally. He said that Jobs was his role model as an entrepreneur.

"His life stories have inspired me and definitely will continue to inspire others for generations to come," he added.

"The news of his passing was a great shock, especially since it was only a day after the iPhone 4S was unveiled. I really didn't see this coming, although we've all been aware of his deteriorating health condition in these recent years," said Khaliq Zaini, a loyal follower of the Apple brand.

Khaliq has been a fan ever since he purchased his first iPod five years ago while studying abroad. He switched to a Mac and purchased the first iPhone a year later.

"It's sad to see him go. He was truly inspiring and a genius. He has created a lot of cool and revolutionary products from the Macs to the iPods and down to the amazing iPhones and iPads, and no doubt that they have brought joy to many Bruneians young and old," he said.

He added, "Love him or hate him, he changed the face of both the computing and mobile industry. The smartphones we carry today wouldn't appear and function exactly as they are now without his vision on the iPhone."

"It was really sad news. He was a true innovator who changed the way we use technology, made them more user-friendly for all mankind, and ultimately made the world a better place," said Aliyah Zin, an Apple product aficionado.

She said that she has been a satisfied Apple user for years, and said that Job's inventions such as the iPhone and the iPad have made her daily life easier and more enjoyable.

"There was this bizarre feeling when I received news of his death this morning via a device which he invented," said an iPhone owner who wished to only be known as Mohd Haslam.

"It's kind of different now that he's gone. I can't think of anyone else with a similar momentum. He was a very important figure of our time, and he will always be remembered," he added.

Mohd Hadi Shafie Othman, iCentre manager, said that the centre has anchored on Jobs as a role model for the incubatees and participants of its workshops organised over the years.

"We at the iCentre look up to Steve Jobs as a prime example of what great entrepreneurs are made of. He was truly a visionary and innovator of our time, and one who was never afraid to think differently and created amazing products which have successfully captured the hearts of millions of people around the world," he said.

"We are highly inspired by his resilience as an entrepreneur, from his humble start-up, the power-struggle, to his amazing comeback and the success he has brought to his company today. This is what we always shared through our workshops and what we hope to see among our local entrepreneurs," he added.

Steve Jobs died on Wednesday at the age of 56 after years of battling cancer.
