KANDAL,
Cambodia, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities on Tuesday began to give
out China-donated relief aids to Cambodian families affected by the flash
floods.
Speaking at the event of distributing the
items to 1,540 flood- affected families in Kandal's Lavea Em district, some 40
kilometers east of Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, Nhim Vanda, vice president
of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said Cambodia profoundly
thanks China for the assistance, saying, "The relief assistance reflects
China's attention to the difficulties of Cambodia."
He said the aids would help Cambodian
government in its efforts to ensure that no Cambodian would die of hunger as a
result of the disaster.
"I hope that after the floods, China will
increase its assistance to Cambodia to rehabilitate roads and irrigation system
that have been damaged by floods," he said.
Vanda said Cambodia has been suffering the
worst in the last decade by the floods since early August. To date, at least
247 people were killed and about 1.5 million people were affected.
Also, the floods completely destroyed more
than 200,000 hectares of rice paddies and affected other 405,000 hectares.
In addition, it has affected and damaged
nearly 3,000 kilometers of gravel roads and some 180 kilometers of national
roads.
China announced last week to grant Cambodia
the emergency flood relief aids worth 50 million yuan (7.8 million U.S.
dollars). The aids included medications, medical supplies, mosquito nets,
blankets, towels and other relief materials.
The supply had been airlifted by two planes to
Cambodia over the weekend.
He Leping, political counselor of Chinese
Embassy to Cambodia, said Tuesday that the distributed relief items included
rice, food, blankets, mosquito nets and medicine.
"China's aids to Cambodia come from
sincere hearts of the government and people of China," he said.
