Singapore - MOE may allow private universities to have public funded programmes

SINGAPORE: The Committee on University Education Pathways is considering allowing private institutions to have public funded programmes.

Speaking at the SIM University Convocation on Thursday, chairman of the committee, Minister of State Lawrence Wong said it is one option committee members are looking at in expanding the university sector.

Other options include leveraging on private institutions to increase university places and focusing more on adult learners and in-employment training.

The committee, which is looking at university education pathways beyond 2015, was first flagged by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Rally speech.

Mr Wong said a key principle guiding the committee is to maintain the quality of university education, even as the sector expands.

He is confident there will be enough jobs for the students after they graduate.

The committee will also keep university education affordable and encourage universities to develop niches of excellence.

Mr Wong said it will not be wise to have an education system that focuses on the university track only.

"Some countries have taken this approach by converting their polytechnics into universities. But after graduating and getting a degree, they find that it is not so easy to find a job. This is an important lesson for us. As we expand the university sector, we must continue to invest and maintain high standards in our polytechnics and ITE," he said.
