Vietnam - Minister discusses education reform

VietNamNet Bridge – Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan yesterday, Oct 4, discussed with HCM City leaders, education officials, and academics strategies for education reform in the country.
Participants said the strategies should be modern and capable of mobilising all available resources.
Educators suggested developing a system for evaluating the quality of teachers and education at kindergartens, high schools, and universities by 2020.
Curriculums should be completely overhauled soon to improve the quality of human resources, they said.
Dr Vu Dinh Thanh of the HCM City University of Technology said the curriculums at universities in the country were identical for every student irrespective of their needs.
The curriculum should be based on whether a student intended to study further or enter the job market, he pointed out.
He called for developing universities that matched their international counterparts in quality and size.
Nguyen Dong Phong, principal of the HCM City University of Economics, urged the government to grant autonomy to all education institutions in the country since that would encourage them to improve quality.
The meeting also called for special policies to improve human resources and teachers' living standards.
Luan underlined the key roles of HCM City and Ha Noi in education reform, and hoped they would become education hubs.
