On Facebook, a student wrote: “After paying all kinds of fees and expenses, I have become a proletarian.”
The student is Le Sang. He has graduated from a university and now he is studying to obtain another university degree in teaching English.
Sang complained that he had to pay 4 million dong in tuitions for the first semester of studying, and 1 million dong for the room rent. “I do not have much money; therefore, I had to move to a place in the suburb area. However, 1 million dong is still unaffordable to me,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sang is luckier than many other students. As he has a university degree, he has got a job which brings an income of 2 million dong a month, including the allowance.
When asked to talk about his life, Sang said: “I work hard at the office and I take extra jobs. I learn hard. I return to my home village once a month to ask for money and rice from mother, which will feed me for a whole month long.”
“My breakfast just includes toothpaste and drinking water,” he continued.
Sang’s brother, an information technology student, who has just entered the university, had also have to pay 4 million dong when registering the study.
Tran Thi Huong, an office worker in Nam Dinh City, has complained that “8 million dong have gone” because she had to pay tuitions and other expenses for the two children – the university students.
Huong said that the school of son requested to pay 3,900,790 dong for dormitory fee at once, and she had to move heaven and earth to arrange enough money for the two children. One of the two sons has to live together with a relative in Hanoi to ease the finance burden on his family.
Meanwhile, P, a student of the Hanoi Foreign Trade University told reporters that he has fallen sick after many days of looking for accommodations. “It is very difficult to look for rooms to rent nowadays, if you just have a little money in your hands.”
According to him, most students seek rooms to rent on Internet. However, in many cases, when they come to ask for the rooms, they are told that the rooms have been booked already.
While the dormitories’ capacity and the number of rooms for rents are limited, the demand has been increasing. Students nowadays have to compete with immigrant workers and the university graduates, who say in big cities to look for jobs, to rent rooms.
The owner of the house at No 16A in the alley No 201 of Cau Giay Street, is leasing 10 square meter rooms at 1 million dong for each a month. There, besides the university students, there are also the families with children.
Nguyen Canh Luan, a new university graduate, said that he has spent a lot of time hunting for rooms to rent, and that he has changed the accommodations for 15 times already.
The high tuitions and school fees have become a hot topic on education forums these days. Previously, only the parents of general school students complained about this, but this has become a problem of university students as well.
On a forum, one can read that a school collects 130,000 dong from every student for the military semester, except the insurance premium, and the money for drinking water. Other schools refuse to collect fees monthly, but request to pay at once, which has been burdening parents and students.
