Vietnam - Royal Thai Kathina ceremony held in Thua Thien – Hue

Nhan Dan – The Royal Thai Kathina (Robe Offering) ceremony, one of the major traditional ceremonials of Theravada Buddhism, was held on October 16 at Huyen Khong Pagoda in Huong Ho commune, Huong Tra district, Thua Thien – Hue province.

The ceremony was attended by the Thai ambassador to Vietnam, Anuso Chivanno; and President of the World Fellowship of Buddhists and Secretary General of the Thai Red Cross Society Phan Wannamephee, along with Buddhist monks, nuns and followers from Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

Representatives of the king of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, offered a royal robe to the head monk at Huyen Khong pagoda, Most Venerable Thich Phap Tong.

The delegation also presented a gilded statue of Buddha Shakyamuni and donated nearly VND800 million to the pagoda.

The event aimed to express the Thai Kingdom’s goodwill towards Vietnamese Buddhist followers, as well as to strengthen Buddhist solidarity and the relationship between Vietnam and Thailand.

The Kathina ceremony is held annually at the end of a three-month retreat during the rainy season between the fifteenth days of the sixth and the ninth lunar months . During the ceremony, followers offer the monks new robes, which they believe will bring both the recipients and participants good fortune.
