Vietnam - ‘Tourism Ambassador does not need university diploma’ (Follow-up)

VietNamNet Bridge – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 7, organized a brief conference to explain the rumors around the newly appointed Tourism Ambassador Ly Nha Ky.

Nguyen Van Tinh, head of the Ministry’s Department of International Cooperation, said that his department holds a copy of actress Ly Nha Ky’s bachelor degree and the certificate of Ky’s father as a war martyr.

However, Tinh refused to make public the papers, saying that Tourism Ambassador is not requested to be a bachelor so he did not need to show off the papers.

Tinh said Vietnam urgently needs someone who can campaign for Ha Long Bay to be voted as one of the seven new natural wonders. He admitted that Ly Nha Ky was chosen three months before when the department was yet to issue a regulation about the selection of a tourism ambassador.

Tinh said the agency considered many other celebrities for the position, but some of them are not good at English and some are very busy. Nha Ky speaks English and German very well and she is very enthusiastic with the mission of a Tourism Ambassador.

The Ministry’s spokesman To Van Dong said that Nha Ky is a Tourism Ambassador of firm stuff. Facing strong criticism but she overcame to do her mission. After taking the new role, Ky has organized meetings at many universities to call for votes for Ha Long Bay campaign. On October 7, she flew to Hong Kong with a delegation by Deputy Minister Le Khanh Hai to join the Asian culture minister meeting.

In Hong Kong, she will hold a reception to welcome 20 tourism and communications partners and promote Vietnam tourism. Later, she will visit the Philippines to campaign for Ha Long Bay.

The Ministry’s representatives asked the media and the public to let Nha Ky do her mission. If she cannot well carry out her mission or makes mistakes while assuming the Tourism Ambassador title, the Ministry will be responsible to solve.

Also at the meeting, Vu Xuan Thanh, chief inspector of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, announced the money lost in a recent corruption case at the Bureau of Cinematography was VND34 billion (US$1.6 million), instead of VND44 or 37 billion as reported by the media.

As for an incident at the “Night of Beauties” show in the central province of Quang Binh in August in which singers wore clothes considered too scanty by public standards, Thanh said a fine of VND3.5 million (US$175) against the organizer was appropriate, even though many said it was too light.
