Vietnam - Vietnam thinks about utilizing overseas students’ grey matter

VietNamNet Bridge – After finishing foreign universities, a lot of Vietnamese students return to the home country, bringing with themselves great ambitions and valuable knowledge. What should Vietnam do to utilize the students’ grey matter?

Foreign university graduates have great advantages

Business managers all agree that foreign university graduates have a lot of advantages in comparison with domestic university graduates, especially the foreign language skills, communication skills and the capability to implement works.

Trinh Hoai Giang, Deputy General Director of HSC, a securities company, noted that thanks with the good foreign language skills, the foreign university graduates now working for HSC can easily communicate with foreign clients and colleagues.

The learning environment in foreign countries and the regular communication with foreigners both can help the students practice their English skills – the thing that no school in Vietnam can provide. The good foreign language skills alone are an obvious advantage for foreign university graduates when applying for the jobs at domestic companies. The skills not only help them easily communicate, but also seek and collect information from foreign sources.

Tieu Yen Trinh, General Director of Talentnet, a head hunting company, noted that in general, employers highly valuate the virtues of foreign university graduates. They always take initiative in their works, give constructive ideas and team up with colleagues well. With the great advantages, foreign university graduates can easily get adapted to the new jobs and the local communities and make great contribution to the development of the companies in particular, and the national economy in general.

Attracting foreign school graduates with high wages and job promotion

A question that every overseas Vietnamese student poses for himself after finishing school is: whether to return to Vietnam to get a job there. If the answer is “return to Vietnam”, then another question would be whether to work for a multinational group in Vietnam or for a Vietnamese company.

Le Tri Thong, Deputy General Director of the Dong A Bank, said that returning to Vietnam proves to be a “hazardous” decision for many foreign university graduates. It is obvious that in Vietnam, they would have fewer opportunities to get promotions in their jobs. Besides, they have also been warned that the labor environment in Vietnam is less healthy than in foreign countries (the working conditions are not good, office workers have to join unhealthy competition with colleagues…).

The most important thing that everyone would consider before making decisions is the possible salary he expects to receive when working in Vietnam. Trinh Hoai Giang from HSC said that the company is now offering foreign school graduates the salary which is 1.5 times higher than the average level for other normal officers, because the company has high expectations on the capability and the dedication of the officers who finish foreign schools.

Commenting about the salaries, Yen Trinh from Talentnet said that in other countries, the salary of a division manager is six times higher than the salary of a new officer. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the gap could be up to 16 times.

Huu Tuan, Head of the IT Division of Prudential, said that foreign companies have stable wage systems, and it is very difficult to escape from the systems if laborers cannot show their outstanding capability, or they are not “super stars”.

Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, Chair of Saigon Co-op, which is considered the biggest retail network in HCM City, declined to comment on the opinions of other employers, and only emphasized that foreign university graduates have more good opportunities for jobs in Vietnam than in foreign countries.

According to Hoa, some key positions in the Saigon Co-op supermarket chain are being taken by very young foreign school graduates.

It is estimated that several thousands of Vietnamese students finish universities and post-university training courses overseas.
