Vietnam - Vocational schools face declining enrolments

VietNamNet Bridge – Two and three-year vocational training programmes are faced with declining enrolment as more universities have opened schools in recent years.

Leaders of vocational colleges and intermediate vocational schools are concerned that universities have an unfair competitive advantage by opening these schools.
Each year, the HCM City University of Industry has recruited more than 5,000 students for its two- and thee-year vocational training programmes.
For the 2011-12 academic year, the HCM City University of Technology has enrolled more than 3,100 students for its three-year vocational training programmes.
Many other universities, including the HCM City University of Food Industry and the Cao Thang Technical College, have recruited more students for these programmes.
Nguyen Thi Hang, rector of the HCM City Vocational College of Technology, said students preferred enrolling at universities because of the poor image of vocational schools.
Many vocational colleges and intermediate vocational school facilities are not well-equipped and do not have good instructors.
Duong Minh Kien, rector of the Quang Trung Intermediate Vocational School, said she was concerned about uneven enrolment.
Many vocational schools might have to close because of declining enrolment, she added.
According to Associate Prof Duong Duc Lan, deputy head of the Vocational Training General Department, the country has 123 vocational colleges and 300 intermediate vocational schools.
Ho Van Si, deputy head of Ly Tu Trong Technical College's training office, said that his school had enrolled only 700 even though its enrolment quota was 800.
Ha Kim Vong, rector of the Khoi Viet Vocational School of Tourism and Hospitality, said that no student applied to study in the school's tourism faculty.
He said students preferred to study vocational training programmes at universities and colleges.
Vocational college and intermediate vocational schools in many other provinces are facing similar problems.
The Ha Nam Vocational College in northern Ha Nam Province currently does not have enough students for this school year.
Tran Dai Nghia, of the Van Lang Vocational College in Ha Noi, said that the school's enrollment quota was 1,500, but only 40 students were enrolled.
