Brunei - Huawei rides on shift to ultra-fast Net for videoconference offer

Chinese tech firm Huawei is banking on Brunei's shift to ultra high-speed Internet connection by next year to market a high-tech videoconferencing solution to government offices.

Huawei's ViewPoint TP3006 Telepresence solution, which debuted in Brunei during the TechXpo, allows users to hold videoconferences and meetings in high-definition video at ultra-high speed broadband connection.

Huawei hopes to see the videoconferencing system in every government offices in the country.

Working closely with TelBru and Sipadu Systems, Huawei is hoping to market its Telepresence solution to government bodies and government-linked companies in Brunei.

"We hope that with the arrival of this technology in Brunei, it will soon make its presence in many government offices," said Poh Chean Leng, deputy director of solution sales at Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd.

Although a pricing structure has not been finalised yet, he said the system would be marketed on a lease basis, although a full investment for a company or government organisation would cost about US$300,000 (S$374,190).

Poh said that the success of Huawei's teleconference solution would depend on the available Internet connection, as the system would require high-speed Internet access to stream full-high definition video and audio smoothly and without lag.

"We are pushing this technology at the right time, where a lot of high-speed Internet is widely available. We know that the market and the network in this region is ready," he said.

He noted Brunei's migration to ultra high-speed connection with Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity which will be available in the Sultanate in 2012.

"Telepresence systems is the future of video conferencing where it aims to give users the impression that they are actually present in remotely-conducted conversations. This involves the use of multiple microphones, speakers, high-definition monitors and cameras," he said.

The three-screen TP3006 Telepresence solution is designed to accommodate up to six people and provides full high-definition video and high quality AAC-LD directional audio across three 65-inch high-definition LCD display screens.

The system is also equipped with a panoramic HD video camera and a wireless touchscreen control panel.

"This system uses high definition screens that is capable of delivering sharp, life-sized images of conference participants, adding to the immersive conferencing experience that is enhanced by clear life-like audio," said Poh.

The system showcased at TelBru's booth at the fair demonstrated Huawei staff on the other end of the conference broadcasted all the way from its headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

"When someone on the other end of the conference is sitting on the left, when they speak, their voice will be heard as if it's coming from the left. This is all done to create the most realistic virtual meeting experience possible," he said.

He said the system can be widely leveraged to improve communications across various industries and organisations, including in banking, education, healthcare and emergency response units.

The new telepresence solution was first launched by Huawei in April 2009 and has since attracted many high-end users such as financial departments and government bodies.

The system has already been deployed worldwide, including companies in the Asia-Pacific, Europe as well as the United Nations.

"Since the arrival of telepresence and advanced high-definition video conference systems, many government organisations and multinational companies worldwide have begun upgrading their existing video conference systems on a large scale over the past two years," said Poh.

Huawei produces a broad range of products, including core voice and data switching platforms for service providers, optical network systems, wireless network infrastructure, network management software and also servers, storage systems, mobile phones handsets and consumer networking equipment.
