Malaysia - Latest technology not enough, engineers told

MIRI: Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin says that technological changes are challenging engineers’ credibility, ability and integrity in the implementation of projects with high standard.

Apart from using the latest technology in their projects engineers must also have the skills to implement their ideas.

He gave this reminder during a dinner of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (Miri Branch) at Parkcity Everly Hotel here on Sunday. The theme of the dinner was ‘Engineers: Builders of A Sustainable Nation’

“During the last couple of years, we have witnessed many infrastructure developments being implemented here such as the building of new roads, schools, pedestrian bridges, shopping malls and recreational facilities. All these are proof of development that would not have happened without the engineers.

“However, engineers must be able to deploy their professional skills and knowledge to ensure that their projects are carried out with quality, integrity and cost saving in mind. Engineers must be able to rise to the occasion and to perform to the best of their ability,” Chin said.

Citing the collapse of the stadium roof in Terengganu, Chin said the incident could damage their profession and their integrity. “This is among issues which IEM should study and present to the community. Engineers must be able to present the latest technology and the skills to complement it.”

He added: “I am happy to see that IEM Miri is pushing ahead to embrace the new century with a sustainable mindset. With the combined effort of IEM Miri, we should all look forward to a sustainable and greener city with more controlled development.”

Also present at the dinner were Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Miri City mayor Lawrence Lai, president of Institution of Engineers Malaysia Vincent Chen Kim Kieong and chairman of IEM Miri branch Goh Soon Boon.
