MANILA - The Philippines' Supreme Court on
Friday rejected a government motion to allow it to re-impose its travel ban on
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, saying the former president was free to leave the
country on Friday for medical treatment.
It also ordered Justice Secretary Leila de
Lima to show within 10 days why she was not in contempt of court for not complying
with its earlier restraining order on a government travel ban on Arroyo and for
showing disrespect to the Court.
Friday's ruling was against a motion by the
government asking the Court to reverse its restraining order.
"The restraining order stays in effect,
so he (Arroyo's husband) and she can leave," Supreme Court spokesman Midas
Marquez told a news briefing.
Earlier on Friday, the election commission
filed charges of electoral sabotage against Arroyo and sought another travel
ban on her..
But Marquez said that case, in a lower court,
was not taken up by the Supreme Court.
Arroyo has booked to flight to Singapore for
medical treatment later in the day.
