The 10-state Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the People’s Republic of China have opened an Asean-China Center in Beijing to boost bilateral trade, investment and tourism.

The center was officially opened in Beijing on May 18. A press release from the Indonesian embassy in Beijing said the new center would help aid in the strategic cooperation in between the two countries.

The opening was a follow-up to the first meeting of the Asean-China Joint Council that was held on May 17-18 to discuss the results of the 14th Asean-China summit in Bali in November.

The embassy said the Asean-China Center hopes to play an important role in backing the achievement in trade, investment and tourism targets between Asean and China as agreed to in their last summit.

Trade between Asean and China is expected to reach $500 billion in 2015, compared to $231.2 billion in 2010. Chinese investment and tourism to Asean is expected to reach $15 billion in value by 2015, the statement said without giving comparative figures.

The center, located at No. 43, Liangmaqiao Road, Chaoyang District in Beijing, has offices, meeting and seminar rooms and an exhibition hall that can be used by any member country of the regional grouping or China.

The center, with the assistance of the Yiwu municipal government is also providing a 5,000 square meter exhibition and sale space for Asean export products for China at the city’s largest large retail market.
