Vietnam - The stories recorded at the lecture halls which people have found at universities

VietNamNet Bridge – Students come late to class, sleep during the lessons, play games and chat with each other were the things seen by some people at universities in Hanoi.

Teacher gives lecture, students play games

Tien phong’s reporter entered a class at a campus of the Dong Do people founded University on Nguyen Trai Road in Hanoi with jeans, white shirt and backpack.

When the reporter turned up, the lesson had last for half an hour already. However, there were only 20 students in the class. The teacher was talking about theatre architecture, while students were busy playing games. Sometimes, new students appeared and entered the class without asking for the permission of the teacher.

It seemed that a “flexible” working hour mechanism was applied at the school, because tens more students appeared after 30 minutes. Some of them quietly found their seats, sat for a while, listened for music, chatted with friends, smoked cigarettes and left. While students took time to fulfill so many works, the lecturer was still busy talking about theatre architecture.

After talking with some friends sitting next, the reporter realized that it was a class of the architecture and urban programming, and that this was the last lesson. The teacher told students to show how they fulfilled the home exercises. However, a lot of students were still absent from the important lesson.

A young boy entered the class from behind and asked a student: “Is this the architecture and urban programming class?” After seeing the nod from the student, the boy gave some documents: “Please hand in the documents to the teacher. Thank you”, and hurriedly left the class.

Meanwhile, the two girls sitting next to the reporter were busy chatting since the beginning of the lesson. After receiving a call, one of the two said: “My boyfriend is coming” and looked at a mirror, preparing for the date with the boyfriend.

All the students were busy with their own works instead of listening to the lecture. Some male students were discussing about a football match, others made messages, while some were playing games.

One of the male students said that the teacher always asks about the number of students present at lessons. However, students always have 1001 “tricks” to cheat the teacher.

Leaving from the lecture about theatre architecture, the reporter entered a class belonging to the business administration nearby. There were a lot of students in the class, approximately 100. However, it seemed that students did not think they needed to listen to the lecture; therefore, they read newspapers, listened to music, played games and even played cards.

Right after the bell rang to signal the break time, students flocked out from the class, and many of them carried schoolbags with themselves. It seemed that they did not intend to return to the class after the break time

Material facilities poor

The reporter dropped in another campus of the Dong Do University at No 20A on Ton That Tung Street in Hanoi the next day.

No one showed surprised to the appearance of a strange student, because strange people appear every day: they may go studying for other students, or they have to repeat classes. It was a class of the Civil Engineering Faculty

The lecturer turned up 20 minutes later after the bell rang. Right after entering the class, the lecturer asked students not to chat and do private works during the lessons. However, students seemed to keep indifferent to the teacher’s words.

“These are the words repeated by the teacher all the time. No need to pay attention to them,” a teacher said.

The so called “school library” was a small room where there were some book shelves, some desk and chairs. Especially, the doors were closed. The students here said that they do not go to libraries regularly, because there is not enough room for all students. Meanwhile, one should not think of borrowing books from libraries, because he would not find the documents he wants.
