Vietnam - Traffic and farmers’ thoughts

To solve serious gridlocks in Hanoi and HCM City, the Ministry of Transport has applied various measures like separating small roads into lanes for different kinds of vehicles, building overpasses, using buses and others.

However, these measures were only effective for a short period of time. When the population rises and transport facilities downgrades, the measures became ineffective, even making counter effects. For example, buses have become “evils on the street” since they have caused many deadly accidents while overpasses have become spots of gridlocks.

One of the main reasons causing serious traffic jams are the people’s poor attitude and awareness of traffic rules.

Uncultured acts in traffic happen every minute in Hanoi and HCM City. Traffic jams can easily happen when buses run in high speed, when the red light is turned on but many people try to cross the road, and also when people group up to see a traffic accident.

Traffic jams would not occur if people obey the traffic laws and to stand each other on the road. But they only care for their own interest and after all, the entire society is jammed.

To solve this most basic reason of traffic jams, comprehensive measures should be implemented.

First of all, the entire society should join hands in fighting gridlocks. Besides traffic police, voluntary groups of students and young people should be set up to regulate traffic flows during the peak hour. This is also the way of educating traffic culture and traffic rules to young people.

The State needs to impose tougher penalties on traffic law violators in order to prevent and restrict repeat offence.

In the long run, it is a must to build a modern subway system in Hanoi and HCM City.
