THE tragic accident that robbed the lives of seven
Bruneians on Tuesday is a stark reminder of how fragile life is.
In a split second, our loved
ones can be taken away from us.
The crash, which effectively
split the tour bus into half as it crashed into a tree near KM9 Tamparuli-Ranau
trunk road in neighbouring Sabah, took seven precious lives and caused critical
injury to several other passengers.
The passengers, over 30 of
them, would not have imagined their scenic tour would come to a tragic end.
Survivor accounts revealed how a leisurely journey became a nightmare after the
tour group left Tawau where they had visited a hot water spring. On their drive
back towards Kota Kinabalu, the bus, said a survivor, was not very steady as it
went up a hill. It was heated and stopped several times.
However, as the bus went
downhill, the brakes seemed to have failed. The bus went very fast, becoming
unstable, swaying from side to side until it crashed into a tree. Some died on
the spot while others passed away at the hospital in Kota Kinabalu.
The nation was in shock.
Relatives said they were speechless, not believing their family members were
involved in the gruesome accident. Everyone seems to know someone involved in
the tragedy.
The authorities responded
quickly, sending a medical team from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS)
Hospital as well as a delegation of top level officials. His Majesty the Sultan
and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam had sent a message of condolences to
the victims on Tuesday wherein he expressed great sadness and prayed that the
souls of the victims be blessed and placed among the pious.
The seven deceased passengers
have been buried after a prayer ceremony at the Jame 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah
yesterday. They are already in the hands of Allah (SWT) and for the rest of us,
who are alive, we must try to deal with this tragedy the best we can and trust
in His will.
