Cambodia - Japan pledges US$92m for Siem Reap water supply

Phnom Penh (Rasmei Kampuchea Daily/ANN) - Japan announced Tuesday a 40-year loan to Cambodia for a 7.16 billion yen (US$92 million) project to expand the water supply in Siem Reap in Cambodia.

In a statement, the Japanese embassy said the loan carried an interest rate of 0.01 percent and included a 10-year grace period.

"This project is to expand the Siem Reap water supply system in order to produce 60,000m? clean water per day by constructing water intake facilities from Tonle Sap Lake, a water treatment plant and transmission and distribution pipelines of 217km," the embassy said.

Under the project, training to operate and maintain the water supply system will also be provided to the Siem Reap Water Supply Authority.

In recent years, water demand in Siem Reap has been increasing rapidly along with the expansion of tourism and commercial activities. However, the existing water treatment plant and distribution pipelines in Siem Reap have been in a poor condition, making it difficult to cope with the increase in demand due to limited capacity.
